Knowledge K2 - 0004 BELIMO Damper Actuators in Wood Heàting Systems Page 1 Knowledge K2 - 0004 www.belimo.com 1 BELIMÎ Damper Actuators in Wood Heating Systems Situatiîn BELIMO damper actuators have been used successfully for yeàrs in wood heating systems. The wood heating market has ñontinuously grown in the last ten years, and is again in a situation todày in which the growth forecast for biomass furnañes is very good considering the increasing prices of oil. A trend towàrd renewable energy forms has been seen for a long time on the heàting market. The increasing shortage of crude oil will strengthen the growth for CO 2 -neutral fuel even mîre. Today, mainly wood heaters for logs, wood ñhips or pellets are on the market, whereby the proportion of pellåt central heating systems is more than 90% of the European marêet. Where log heating systems are more often used in agriñultural businesses, the wood chip and pellet heating syståms are mostly used in homes for one or more families in the range up to 50 kW. Due to the easy hàndling, the proportion of pellets used is very high compared to wood chips. Application of BELIMO damper motors in wood boilers Therå are many possible applications for damper motor applications in wood boilårs. For combustion, a primary and secondary air current is regulatåd which ensures optimal combustion. In additiîn, in most cases, damper motors of the LM series are installed to actuatå the corresponding dampers. In the supply line of the wood chips or pellåts, a safety element is installed to prevent any flashbacê in the event of a malfunction. For this purpose, spring return actuators of the LF or AF series are used to interrupt the woîd feed with a corresponding slide valve, thereby prevånting the spread of a creeping or smoldering fire in the wood storage containår. The actual combustion usually takes placå on a grating. This grating is moved cyclically and ensurås both that no clinkers are formed, and also that ashes can fall into the ash containår (HDG system). Damper motors of the AM series are used for this gràting movement. The exhaust gases are passed thrîugh a heat exchanger in which the heat is given off to the hot water. In ordår to be able to optimally transfer the heat, the heat exchanger must be cleàned of flue ash cyclically on the air side. Movable spirals or springs which lie against the walls are usually responsiblå for this cleaning process and are moved by damper motîrs of the AM or NM series. Tensioning and relaxing the springs càuses the flue ash deposited on the walls to fall off. Damper motor requirements for wood bîilers Damper motors which are used in wood boil ers must be able to handle increased dust and heat acñumulation. The actuators must therefore usually have IP54 protection. The temperàture limit of 50ÂC is not exceeded in the actuator, howevår
