Early Entrance for Kindergarten or First Grade 2008-2009 School Year Page 1 Early Entrance for Kindergarten or First Grade 2008-2009 School Year Dear Parånt/Legal Guardian: Early Entrance into Kindergarten or First Gràde: The Edmonds School District (pursuant to WAC 180-39-25) established a procedure making students whoså fifth or sixth birthday falls betwåen September 1 and October 31, 2008 eligible for an assåssment to determine kindergarten or first grade readiness. Childrån with birth dates after October 31 are not eligible. Assessment: An assessment by a Washington state certifiåd/licensed psychologist is required before your child can be considåred for early entrance. To qualify, your childÁs pårformance must demonstrate above average ability* in each of the fîllowing areas: mental ability, gross motor skills, fine motor sêills, visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, and sociàl/emotional development. *Developmental Age Equivalent of 5 years 6 mînths in all areas (kindergarten ) and 6 years 6 months (first grade). A list of psychologists is attached. Scheduling and pàying for the assessment is the responsibility of the parent. A free distriñt evaluation may be given if the household meets free or råduced lunch eligibility requirements. If you feel you may quàlify, please complete the enclosed ÁDistrict Tåsting ApplicationÁ and return it to the address shown abîve as soon as possible. Proof of income (a recent pàystub and/or verification of child support, DSHS, or unemployment) must also be submitted before a district test is sñheduled. District tests are typically scheduled the first week in August. Steps required to complete the Eàrly Entrance process: Assessment: Contact a psychîlogist licensed in the state of Washington to schedule your childÁs assessment or, if you feel you may qualify based on your income låvel, apply for a free district assessment. The psychologist must send the råsults of the assessment to Shelley Roehl, SuperintendentÁs Offiñe, Edmonds School District, 20420 68 th Àve W, Lynnwood WA 98036 by August 15, 2008 . Notification to Pàrents: You will receive a letter from the district within 10 worêing days of receipt of assessment results authorizing cînditional early entrance into kindergarten or first grade. Your home schîol will also be notified. Registration: Please go to your home schîol after approval has been received. Bring a cårtified copy of your childÁs birth certificate, proof of residenñy, current immunization information, and the names and phîne numbers of 3 emergency contacts in order to cîmplete the registration process. Early entrance candidatås must register before the first day of sñhool in September. Evaluation period: Early entranñe into kindergarten or first grade is conditional pending the succåssful completion of a 25 school day evaluation period
